Thrilling Beauty - Exhibition of Masterpieces from the Baikyoan Collection

Bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women) developed as a uniquely Japanese field of painting. Its origins are said to date back to genre paintings in the early modern period, and it became popular through ukiyo-e prints in the Edo period, and was popular from the end of the Meiji period through the Showa period.
The Baikyoan Collection features works from the heyday of bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women), by leading modern and contemporary Japanese painters, including Uemura Shōen and Kikuchi Keigetsu from Kyoto, Kaburagi Kiyokata and Ito Shinsui from Tokyo, Kitano Tsunetomi and Shima Seien from Osaka, and Takehisa Yumeji.
This exhibition will focus on the collection and introduce around 70 paintings of beautiful women, depicting scenes from the four seasons. The images of women admiring the cherry blossoms, relaxing in the cool evening air, reading a book late into the night, gazing engrossed in the falling snow...these scenes of women enjoying the beauty of each season are representative of the Japanese sense of beauty itself.
Please come and enjoy these masterpieces of beauties that will make your heart flutter, featuring the colors of Japanese nature, the gorgeous attire and seductive gestures of the women.
