"Kamakura Shogun" and the Warlords - Masterpieces of the Asai Collection of Ukiyo-e Prints from Utagawa Kuniyoshi to Tsukioka Yoshiyuki

"Kamakura-dono" refers to Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, and by extension, to the Kamakura Shogunate and its Shoguns. We will be holding an exhibition that traces the era of "Kamakura-dono," who is currently attracting attention through a TV drama, through ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
The Asai Collection, which constitutes this exhibition, is a collection of ukiyo-e prints collected by Asai Yusuke, a second-hand bookstore owner in Osaka. This time, we will be exhibiting about 100 pieces carefully selected from the collection of over 30,000 pieces.
The works on display were created by artists who specialized in warrior paintings, such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and they vividly depict history and legends from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period with brilliant colors and bold compositions.
Come and see the famous scenes from this turbulent era at the place where Yoritomo raised his flag, such as Minamoto no Yoritomo's subjugation of the Taira clan, the meeting between Ushiwakamaru and Benkei, the tragic love story between Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Shizuka Gozen, and the story of the birth of the Hojo clan's three-scale crest.
