Hiroshi Abe's Picture Books and Art: The Beat of Animal Souls

Hiroshi Abe, a picture book author who worked as a zookeeper at Asahiyama Zoo for 25 years, has lived through his experiences of observing and living alongside animals and the wild instincts that inhabit them.
In addition to works themed around the natural beauty and culture of Hokkaido, where he was born and raised, in recent years he has also traveled extensively to the Arctic and South America for research, and continues to present stories of animal life in vivid colors.
This exhibition will showcase Abe's work, focusing on his 33rd year of creative activity this year, and his work including his representative work "Stormy Night" (by Kimura Yuichi), in which a goat and its natural enemy, a wolf, meet in the darkness on a stormy night without knowing who they are, and the friendship they develop even after they discover each other's true identities, as well as the popular "A Lion's XX Day" series.

profile

Hiroshi Abe
Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1948. Currently residing in Asahikawa.
For 25 years, from 1972, he was in charge of various animals as a zookeeper at Asahiyama Zoo. He left behind illustrations of the dreams of "behavioral exhibits" that the zookeepers had discussed, and became the key to the revival of Asahiyama Zoo. He retired from the zoo in 1996, and now focuses on creating picture books and holding workshops around the country. Since 2011, he has been working on creating a town that can be enjoyed by both children and adults through art, including running "Gallery Purupuru" based in Asahikawa City.
