The Beginning Story
-Focusing on the Sano Museum of Art's famous sword collection-

Ryuichi Sano (1889-1977), a businessman involved in the production of ferroalloys, began collecting art after acquiring swords that had been handed down through the Tokugawa Shogunate. He became interested in swords made from iron, and began collecting in an attempt to understand the full scope of Japanese swords. Gradually, his interest extended to other genres of art, and he built the foundation of the Sano Museum of Art Collection, which focuses on Oriental art, including calligraphy and paintings by Hakuin Ekaku, who was associated with Mishima, Chinese and Korean ceramics, and gilt bronze Buddhas.
This exhibition will introduce approximately 60 items, mainly from our museum's sword collection, which we hope you will see.
*The "Famous Swords of the Kyoto National Museum" exhibition has been canceled this year due to the impact of COVID-19.
