2027.01.08 Fri - 2027.04.04 Sun
榛原―はいばら―の藝術とデザイン

Haibara is a traditional Japanese paper shop that has been located in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, for 220 years, since the Edo period. In its early days, it was a high-end Japanese paper shop specializing in ganpi paper made in Atami, and was beloved by the cultural figures of Edo.

The successive heads of the Haibara family cultivated close relationships with leading painters of their time. In particular, the third-generation head, Naojiro Haibara, who was active from the late Edo period to the Meiji era, commissioned designs for products from artists such as Zeshin Shibata, Kyosai Kawanabe, and Gyokusho Kawabata, and the fourth-generation head who followed also commissioned designs from artists such as Yumeji Takehisa and Hasui Kawase, laying the foundation for the Haibara designs that are still carried on today.

This exhibition showcases washi paper products such as chiyogami (decorative paper), uchiwae (fan paintings), picture tanzaku (narrow strips of paper), picture envelopes, pochibukuro (small envelopes for gifts), and noshi (decorative paper wrapping), produced from the Meiji to the early Showa period, along with valuable original paintings and documents. Please enjoy the world of Haibara washi paper, woven together by elegant designs and exquisite craftsmanship.
