Outline

Mishima City in Shizuoka Prefecture has long flourished as a post town on the Tokaido road, and the atmosphere of that time still remains today. Sano Art Museum is a private art museum that opened in 1966 in this town of history and murmuring streams.
The museum was founded by businessman Ryuichi Sano (1889-1977), an honorary citizen of Mishima City, with the hope of making wider use of the art he had collected over the years.
The Sano Art Museum's main activity is exhibitions, which are held about six times a year and feature a wide variety of exhibits, including swords, dolls, paintings, and picture books.
We also focus on education to help people become more familiar with art through year-round courses, events accompanying exhibitions, and visiting schools in the area to give lectures.

Ryuichi Sano

Born in Mishima, he graduated from the former Nirayama Junior High School (now Nirayama High School) and then studied applied chemistry at Tokyo Higher Technical School (now Tokyo Institute of Technology) and engaged in research and development. He served as the representative partner of Tekkosha Limited Partnership and as an executive officer of dozens of companies, and made a major contribution to the development of modern Japan as a pioneer in the chemical industry.
In his hometown of Mishima, he donated large sums of money to the development of the city, and also founded the Sano Museum of Art, donating his treasured art collection to it.

School Partnerships

In order to provide an opportunity for visitors to become familiar with art and to develop a richer sense of aesthetics, our museum began an admission agreement system in 1997.
Students and faculty from participating schools, along with up to two accompanying persons, can visit exhibitions throughout the year by showing identification such as a student handbook, and can also enjoy special privileges regarding the use of the museum's facilities and viewing of exhibits.
We have agreements with high schools, universities, junior high schools, etc., and the facilities are put to good use for school extracurricular classes, club activities, and interactions with family and friends.
